midterm panic
As I brought all of my sketches together last night to start assembling a presentation, I realized that though I had learned a lot about textures and touch, there was a lot that went unsatisfied by simple rubber skins with lumps.
A few weeks ago, my professor had us pick a word for how we wanted people to feel when they looked at our projects. Soulless was the word that came to mind. I wanted people to realize that their electronics had no nostalgia, emotion or physical connection. The goal is to provide a way for the user to feel connected with their device in a way that the glass screen cannot. To provide for them a connection with the physical world.
I had been working towards a rubber case, the standard skin used to protect and personalize electronics, but with an element that made it more enjoyable to touch. Ten textures have now been made in rubber and I have accomplished my goal. When you feel them, they feel soulless. All of the success that I have had in improving my understanding of what is enjoyable to hold has given me nothing more than more interesting rubber.
I'm going to try to fix that now.
