It's time we Met

For those of you who live near the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the phrase is familiar. The ad campaign from 2009-10 showed people and art from the collection interacting. I'm a little late on my entry, but here it is.
Notice anything? I have heard that fans of Harry Potter wear robes to book signings, Trekkies wear uniforms to cons, and sports fans obviously wear team colors for their outings. When I heard that Carlton was on display, I just had to go see it (him?), and when I went to see it, I had to wear my fan sweater.

This is me emulating the cantilevered shelves. I tried to think of a more clever pose but couldn't. Anyhow, by taking this cheesy picture, I can ensure that the internet knows that I'm a big enough designerd to dress up for museum trips.

extra nerd cred for anyone who outdoes me by wearing the infamous Eames leg brace to somewhere showing or selling bent ply furniture.

What I did over winter break...

Here it is, my post-post-modern masterpiece of a sweater. The original pattern is adapted from the 1987 holiday issue of vogue knitting and the chart is based on the Carlton shelf designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1981.
I do not know what Ettore would say about this, but underneath the picture of Carlton in Barbara Radice's 1984 book about Memphis it says this:
"... 'My idea,' -said Keawe- 'is to have a beautiful house and garden on the Kona Coast, where I was born, the sun shining in at the door, flowers in the garden, glass in the windows, pictures on the walls and toys and fine carpets on the tables, for all the world like the house I was in this day - only a storey higher, and with balconies all about like the king's palace; and to live there without care and make merry with my friends and relatives.' ... "
I hope that was enlightening.

Anyway, below is the stitch chart in case anyone is interested in making a Carlton sweater of their own, but I doubt that there are many knitting designerds out there that enjoy Memphis that much.

Have fun with this chart- it would make a nice pillow or something...

Pixel Shelf

I made this little icon of Carlton as a potential knitting stitch pattern. It was the only really odd thing that I could think to put on the sweater that I am working on right now. It makes a really nice Memphis Group icon or avatar.

If Memphis Made Bathingsuits

ruffeoheartslilsnoty is selling this on etsy. If I owned this, I could be Carlton for halloween.
Next time I am in Brooklyn, I am going to find these people and their incredible color clothing.
